Principles
“Contribution for construction of safe and reliable society by supplying suitable material technology”
Business Overview
The following businesses will be expanded in all countries around the world.
- Provision of Matguide (Material Information Platform)
Provide all technical assets through MatGuide(Material Information Platform)(https://www.matguide.com) in the following format.
– Annual subscription business
– Customization (transfer of data and functions to customer servers)
– Leveraging AI to reduce reliance on human labor, supporting maintenance DX and smart maintenance - RBM (Risk-Based Maintenance)
– RBM software (sale of uni-Planner)
– RBM system construction (contract work)
– Supports maintenance DX and smart maintenance - Damage Investigation (Collaborating with consulting and testing analysis agencies worldwide)
– Cause investigation and countermeasure creation
– Response as a third-party organization (insurance, litigation support) - Engineer training
– Training on necessary technical knowledge related to design, manufacturing, and maintenance
– Programs available for beginners, advanced, and educational institutions
Business Feature
- Founder Shigemitsu Kihara, formerly the director of IHI Basic Technology Research Institute, established Best Materia Co. based on his achievements in research on metallic materials, particularly material damage, and analysis in actual equipment.
- From years of experience in failure investigation and analysis, we confirmed that the degradation and damage mechanisms of metals consist of 147 mechanisms (there are no others) (Table 1) and the company provides knowledge, data, and tools (including AI) to predict and prevent these 147 mechanisms in all types of equipment, aiming to eliminate failure accidents, along with consulting by experienced engineers.
- Areas where strengths can be demonstrated
– Industrial sector; Upstream and downstream in oil and gas, and power (thermal, nuclear, new energy), and various manufacturing industries
– Technology area; Engineering of materials, welding, design, manufacturing and maintenance, including regulations, standards, and certifications. - We connect with skilled engineers, university research institutions, and testing and analysis organizations around the world in the above technical fields, and resolve any damage or failure issues that occur anywhere in the world through analysis, testing, and expert evaluation, including reproduction experiments. The materials database collaborates with NIMS (Japan), Total Materia (Switzerland), and ANSYS Granta (UK), while testing and analysis, including reproduction experiments, are conducted in cooperation with domestic materials testing companies and NICMS (China). Consulting services are provided in collaboration with ETD (UK), EXPINION (South Korea), and domestic and international university research institutions. Information (including tools such as AI) is shared through MatGuide (https://www.matguide.com).
- We are working on the recent issues, risk, ESG, and procurement with the following concepts.
Utilization of Risk; We views risk as a quantitative concept that encompasses both “danger” and “safety”, and provides a risk value that allows stakeholders to discuss and agree on the boundaries between “danger” and “safety”. Specifically, Risk Based Design(RBD), Risk Based Procurement (RBP) and Risk Based Maintenance (RBM) are systematized and provided.
ESG compliance; We provides data such as the carbon footprint and LCA of materials by utilizing the global material database Total Materia, supporting ESG in design and manufacturing.
Procurement; we provides information on material standards, properties, quality, and equivalency from countries around the world, as well as risk-based procurement (RBP) methods necessary to optimize risks in global material selection and procurement.
Public Project Participation Record
- 2001-2005: “Failure Knowledge Database”
The results were taken over by Best Materia and sold on matguide as a collection of plant material damage cases, and the data is used as training data for AI that sets up damage mechanisms. - 2003-2007: “Development of Advanced Maintenance Technology for Prolonged Life of Structures”
Basic knowledge on risk-based maintenance (RBM) was shared domestically. This serves as the foundation for our RBM business. - 2004-2006: “Development of Allowable Stress Database”
Knowledge essential for pressure equipment design was shared. - 2016-Present: Oil-Producing Countries Support Project “Provision of New Plant Maintenance Technologies”
Advanced equipment maintenance technologies were provided to Saudi Arabia, Vietnam, and Thailand, establishing a mutual information exchange relationship. - 2020-2022: NEDO Grant Project “Development of Damage Mechanism Setting AI”
Widely used as a tool to set and manage concerning damage mechanisms in plant maintenance. - 2025-2028: Tama (Tokyo) Innovation Ecosystem Promotion Project
Applying the RBM system with proven performance in large plants to maintenance of manufacturing and infrastructure equipment in SMEs, aiming to expand RBM business domestically and internationally.
